Here are some notes adapted from Matheus’ 2012 blog post on homoclinic tangles and quadratic homoclinic tangencies. I wrote these notes to share my reading with a friend as I learn about the Newhouse phenomenon in dynamics. Hopefully they are of use to someone; they have a few additional comments and illustrations on top of Matheus’ exposition that are intended to help people who are newer to dynamical systems.
